Stephanie Pfriender Stylander

Stephanie Pfriender Stylander studied at Endicott College in Massachusetts and The School of Visual Arts in New York City, receiving Associate and Bachelor of Art degrees in photography. While at school in Manhattan she began assisting various fashion and still life photographers. Upon graduation, Pfriender Stylander exclusively assisted Art Kane, who became an important influence on her work and life.

Her career in photography began in the early 1990s when she moved to Milan and Paris, where she was chosen as one of the new young talents to exhibit in Barcelona’s Festival International de la Photo de Mode. Her early fashion editorial clients, British GQ, French Glamour and Harper's Bazaar Uomo took notice of her cinematic, poetic, black and white style photography, which also led to portrait assignments of prominent actors and musicians.

In 1992, she received an assignment to shoot a fashion story in New York for Italian Harper’s Bazaar. Looking for a new face, a model agent recommended that she consider a new girl they had just met in London who was “a punk- type kid - offbeat, cool, petite, unusual”, and who hadn’t worked in New York before. The “new girl” was Kate Moss, and these photographs became her editorial debut in the U.S.

Pfriender Stylander's images have been widely published in magazines throughout the world, British GQ, Conde Nast Traveller, French Glamour, Interview, Newsweek, Vanity Fair and Vogue. She photographed entertainment legends, such as Bjork, Sheryl Crow, Aretha Franklin, John Hurt, Samuel L. Jackson, Lenny Kravitz, Nicole Kidman, Heath Ledger, Jennifer Lopez and Keith Richards.

Her photographs have been included at AIPAD, Paris Photo, Photo Basel, Photo London, and Photo Shanghai, and are housed in private collections worldwide. Her work has received numerous awards from American Photography, Communication Arts, International Photography Awards, and The Lucie Foundation.

In the fall of 2018, Pfriender Stylander published her first monograph entitled, The Untamed Eye by MW Editions, for which she received the International Photography Award

"IPA 2019, First Place" in the category „Book, Monograph“.
