Vivian Maier
Chicago, 1958Her work was discovered only by chance in 2007, when part of her archive was auctioned off due to unpaid storage fees. Filmmaker and collector John Maloof recognized the cultural and artistic value of the material and began meticulously reconstructing the archive. Since then, Vivian Maier has been celebrated worldwide as one of the most important voices in street photography. Her images from fleeting urban scenes to intimate portraits are marked by a rare sense of composition, timing, and human depth.
This exhibition invites visitors to rediscover not only her famous black-and-white works but also her often-neglected color photographs. These images offer a surprising perspective on Maier’s artistic practice: they highlight her technical mastery as well as her emotional sensitivity in capturing light, color, and atmosphere. She documented life not only in New York and Chicago but also traveled with her camera to places such as Paris, Puerto Rico, Bangkok, Cairo, and Genoa.

Vivian Maier observed the world with quiet insistence—her photographs reflect social, political, and architectural change as well as intimate human moments. Despite a life lived in the shadows, she left behind a body of work that continues to raise compelling questions: Who was this woman who saw the world so sharply and empathetically? And why did she choose not to be seen?
“Myth in the Shadows – The Eye of Vivian Maier” offers a rare opportunity to explore the full breadth of a woman’s work whose photographic legacy has become one of the most significant chapters in modern photographic history.
