We are pleased to announce the upcoming solo exhibition
Corina Gertz — The Averted Portrait: The Quiet Language of Textiles
on view from 29 January to 31 March 2026 at Ira Stehmann Fine Art.
Join us for our Open Saturday on 31 January 2026 from 11:00 am till 5:00 pm.
In her long-term photographic project The Averted Portrait, Corina Gertz rethinks the tradition of portraiture by turning the figures away from the camera and shifting the focus from the individual face to clothing as a bearer of cultural memory. Her photographs show women in traditional garments, mostly seen from behind or slightly averted, allowing fabrics, patterns and craftsmanship to speak of history, identity and belonging.
The exhibition presents a curated selection from this extensive body of work, with a focus on photographs from Germany and China, complemented by individual works from Romania and Spain. Together, they reveal clothing as a form of non-verbal communication — as a language that conveys social roles, cultural affiliation and lived experience across generations.
We warmly invite you to visit the exhibition and discover the quiet, attentive and powerful visual language of Corina Gertz’s work.
We look forward to welcoming you.
